Zambia, UK Strengthen Ties and Discuss Cooperation at UNGA Meeting
Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, SC, M.P., held a bilateral meeting with the United Kingdom’s Minister for Development, Her Excellency Ms. Anneliese Dodds, at the United Nations Headquarters during the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Hon. Haimbe emphasized the excellent relations between Zambia and the UK, grounded in mutual respect, rule of law, and good governance. He expressed gratitude for the UK’s warm reception of President Hakainde Hichilema during his recent visit to Buckingham Palace.
During the meeting, Hon. Haimbe introduced Dr. Samuel Munzele Maimbo as Zambia’s candidate for the Presidency of the African Development Bank (AfDB) and requested the UK’s support for his candidacy.
In response, Ms. Dodds acknowledged the request, stating it was under review. She further noted that Dr. Maimbo’s advocacy for prudent financial resource management in Africa aligns with the UK’s development priorities.
Ms. Dodds extended her condolences to Zambia over the devastating impacts of climate change and highlighted several UK-supported programs in Zambia, including the school feeding program. She also praised Zambia’s Social Cash Transfer system.
The Ministers discussed potential collaboration in key sectors such as energy, health, education (with a focus on girls’ access to education), environmental protection, and agriculture.
