His Excellency Dr. Amani Abeid Karume, former President of Zanzibar, arrived in Maputo today to lead the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) for Mozambique’s General and Provincial Elections, scheduled for October 9, 2024.
Appointed by Tanzanian President and Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation, Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, Dr. Karume will oversee the SEOM’s efforts in ensuring a peaceful and transparent electoral process.
The mission is part of SADC’s commitment to upholding democratic principles in its member states, as outlined in the revised SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections (2021).
The official SEOM launch will take place on October 3, 2024, in Maputo, with Dr. Karume scheduled to meet with key electoral stakeholders, including Mozambique’s National Electoral Commission (CNE), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and SADC diplomats.
The SEOM will also observe the election process, starting from in-country deployment of observers to monitoring the polling day activities.
Dr. Karume’s leadership aims to bolster regional cooperation and ensure a credible, fair, and peaceful electoral process in Mozambique.
