Malawi President Engages UN Secretary General on Strengthening Collaboration
Malawi’s President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has paid a courtesy call on United Nations Secretary General António Guterres, discussing ongoing collaboration between Malawi and various UN agencies in areas critical to the country’s development.
Key issues discussed included the UN’s role in building Malawi’s capacity ahead of the 2025 tripartite elections, as well as support for rehabilitating public infrastructure damaged by natural disasters like Cyclone Freddy.
While President Chakwera expressed appreciation for the UN’s interventions, he emphasized the need for deeper collaboration to overcome economic challenges.
President Chakwera highlighted the importance of leveraging UN support mechanisms such as the UN Technology Bank for Least Developed Countries, the UNIPOD project at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences, and the 2024-2028 UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for Malawi, to ensure the country achieves significant progress in its economic and development goals.
