Zambia Participates in 2024 Global Saemaul Leadership Forum in South Korea
Zambia has successfully participated in the 2024 Global Saemaul Leadership Forum in South Korea, reaffirming its commitment to transforming communities guided by the principles of self-help, diligence, and cooperation.
The forum, which marks its 11th year, was held under the theme “Together Saemaul, to the World, Future,” and brought together delegates from 45 countries, including Permanent Secretaries, Directors, and Ambassadors.
The Zambian delegation, led by Ms. Angela Kawandami, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, shared Zambia’s experience with the Saemaul Undong initiative.
She highlighted its transformative impact, particularly in Kafue and Chikankata districts, where the movement is being implemented as a pilot project. The initiative focuses on community-led development through improved infrastructure, water, and sanitation, which Ms. Kawandami described as symbols of hope and progress.
Ms. Kawandami emphasized Zambia’s appreciation for the opportunity to participate in the forum, which she said fosters the sharing of experiences and reinforces the country’s dedication to the principles of Saemaul Undong.
“This platform provides a unique opportunity to learn from the successes of other nations and accelerate development in our communities,” she stated.
She also acknowledged the positive outcomes in Kafue and Chikankata, where the Saemaul Undong model has empowered residents, improved healthcare, and enhanced community cohesion.
The Permanent Secretary expressed Zambia’s eagerness to further collaborate with other countries to bring about lasting change in local communities through shared knowledge and support.
During the forum, Saemaul Undong President, Mr. Gwang Lim Kim, praised the initiative’s global impact, noting that it has transformed villages by improving infrastructure, increasing income, and instilling a resilient “We can do it” mindset among residents.
He called on nations already implementing the Saemaul Undong movement to integrate it as a national policy priority, emphasizing its potential to build a thriving global community through solidarity and cooperation.
Mr. Lim Kim pledged continued support for nations participating in the movement, urging them to adopt Saemaul Undong as a key strategy for national development and to strengthen international cooperation in efforts to foster community-driven growth and progress.
