Google to Establish AI Center of Excellence at University of Zambia
Google is set to establish an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Center of Excellence at the University of Zambia, marking a significant milestone for Southern Africa. This development follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Google and the Ministry of Technology and Science in June 2024.
Technology and Science Minister Hon. Felix Mutati announced that the Center will be located at the Zambia Research and Education Network (ZAMREN), housed within the University of Zambia.
The Center of Excellence will be the first of its kind in Southern Africa and aims to foster innovation among young Zambian entrepreneurs.
During a recent tour of the newly constructed ZAMREN House in Lusaka, Mr. Mutati highlighted the Center’s potential to empower youth to develop solutions for Zambia’s pressing challenges.
“Young people will have the opportunity to transform their ideas into products and solutions that address key issues facing our nation,” he said.
Mr. Mutati also praised ZAMREN for its role in connecting 150 institutions across Zambia to high-speed internet, which supports skills training institutes and enables students to access free internet for research purposes.
ZAMREN Board Secretary Ronald Hatoongo expressed gratitude for the Ministry’s ongoing support and affirmed the institution’s commitment to enhancing internet access to promote innovation.
