Zambia Strengthens Strategic Partnership with China During Bilateral Discussions in Xi’an
President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia has reaffirmed the strong ties between Zambia and the People’s Republic of China during high-level bilateral discussions in Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province.
The Zambian delegation, led by President Hichilema, met with His Excellency Zhao Gang, Deputy Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Shaanxi Provincial Committee, and Governor of Shaanxi Province, to explore avenues for further collaboration in development, trade, and people-to-people exchanges.
During the meeting, President Hichilema emphasized Zambia’s eagerness to learn from China’s successful strategies in addressing critical challenges, particularly in the areas of food and energy security.
He highlighted the devastating droughts that have impacted Zambia, expressing a keen interest in transitioning from rain-fed agriculture to water harvesting and precision irrigation, as well as shifting from hydroelectric power to solar and green energy—sectors where China has demonstrated exemplary leadership.
“We are impressed by the rapid strides and quantum leaps in China’s economic development, evident each time we visit. We wish to learn from their innovative approaches and leverage their expertise to drive our own growth,” said President Hichilema.
The discussions also underscored the deepening comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations, which is set to be further strengthened as Zambia and China approach the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. This milestone aligns with Zambia’s own 60th anniversary of independence.
In a statement, President Hichilema reaffirmed Zambia’s support for the People’s Republic of China’s One China Policy, emphasizing the importance of this longstanding partnership in fostering mutual development and cooperation.
