Ministry of Health Progresses with Recruitment of Cholera Volunteers
Zambia’s Ministry of Health is making significant strides in the recruitment of volunteers who served in cholera centers, in line with a presidential directive.
Health Minister Dr. Elijah Muchima confirmed during a press briefing that the ministry is collaborating closely with the Public Service Management Division and the Civil Service Commission to ensure the recruitment process is conducted efficiently and in full compliance with government procedures.
Dr. Muchima reported that the Civil Service Commission has already employed 616 professional staff who previously worked as volunteers.
Additionally, out of the 1,687 community volunteers who served at Heroes Stadium, 303 have been recruited as general workers under the government’s phased approach.
The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to fulfilling the directive, acknowledging the crucial role these volunteers played during the cholera outbreak.
The recruitment process, which is ongoing, is being handled with diligence to ensure all volunteers are integrated into the public service effectively.
In the same briefing, Dr. Muchima addressed concerns over the emerging mpox outbreak, previously known as monkeypox.
He noted that while Zambia has not yet recorded any cases, the government has intensified surveillance and active case-finding efforts in response to the rapid spread of the virus across the continent.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared mpox a global health emergency, prompting the Zambian government to urge citizens to adopt strict hygienic practices to prevent potential outbreaks.
