The Zambian government has earmarked K22 million in grants to support innovators and inventors in developing solutions to address critical national challenges, particularly in the areas of energy and climate change.
This initiative aims to assist local talent in transforming their prototypes into viable products that can contribute to solving pressing issues facing the country.
Speaking at the official opening of the Consultative Workshop on the Development of a Generic Commercialisation and Technology Transfer Framework in Lusaka, Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Felix Mutati, emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering innovation.
He highlighted that the funds will enable young innovators to actualize products that can be commercially successful and provide practical solutions to societal challenges.
“There is a wealth of creativity and expertise in Zambia that, if harnessed, can address many of the pressing issues we face today,” said Mr. Mutati. He pointed out that the current drought and energy deficit require innovative technologies to mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure sustainable development.
Mr. Mutati also announced that the government is reviewing the Science and Technology Policy to address various challenges in the sector. Additionally, the introduction of the Start-Up Bill is underway, which aims to attract venture capital to support start-ups and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Zambia.
