Presidents Hichilema and Ndayishimiye Grace the 96th Lusaka Agricultural and Commercial Show

President Hakainde Hichilema and President Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi graced the 96th Lusaka Agricultural and Commercial Show, highlighting the event’s significance in promoting agriculture, entrepreneurship, and trade.

The two leaders toured selected stands, where exhibitors showcased innovative products and services. During the opening ceremony, President Ndayishimiye expressed gratitude for the invitation, emphasizing the importance of leveraging Africa’s natural resources sustainably. 

He underscored the need to address climate change to promote resilience and food security.

Burundi has prioritized agriculture to boost economic growth, including implementing a national fertilizer subsidy program that has increased production. President Ndayishimiye noted that agreements signed between Zambia and Burundi would enhance cooperation in key sectors. He expressed optimism that the show would foster partnerships benefiting both nations.

President Hichilema thanked President Ndayishimiye for his participation and highlighted the need for public-private sector collaboration to increase production, create employment, and encourage entrepreneurship. 

He praised Burundi’s strides in fostering peace and stability, essential for development. President Hichilema also addressed the drought in Zambia, outlining measures such as climate-smart agriculture, early maturing crops, mechanization, and precision irrigation.

The bilateral talks between the presidents at State House on August 1, 2024, resulted in the signing of six Memoranda of Understanding in commerce, trade, and agriculture. 

On August 2, 2024, President Ndayishimiye addressed Zambia’s National Assembly and toured SeedCo, a Pan-African seed company in Lusaka.

President Ndayishimiye concluded his visit to Zambia on August 3, 2024, after attending the agricultural show, which is anticipated to generate key partnerships and tangible benefits for Zambians.
