Zambia Marks 2024 World Day Against Human Trafficking with Renewed Commitment to Child Protection
Zambia today commemorated the 2024 World Day Against Human Trafficking with a solemn event held in Lusaka, focusing on the theme “Leave No Child Behind in the Fight Against Human Trafficking.”
The event, preceded by a march past, underscored the urgent need to address various forms of child trafficking, including forced labour, forced begging, illegal adoption, recruitment into armed forces, and online sexual exploitation.
Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Jack Mwiimbu SC, highlighted the diverse and alarming forms of child trafficking in a speech delivered on his behalf by Permanent Secretary Dickson Matembo.
He emphasized that addressing human trafficking requires concerted efforts at both national and international levels and urged the public to prioritize child protection.
Minister Mwiimbu received tools for Criminal Justice Institutions from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and a guide document for the implementation of a USD 12-million partnership project between the United States government and Zambia.
This partnership aims to enhance the fight against trafficking in persons over the next five years.
“These tools will go a long way in building capacity on handling human trafficking. Further, allow me to thank the United States government for the support to be provided over a period of 5 years in the fight against trafficking in persons,” Minister Mwiimbu stated.
