Angola to Implement New Minimum Wage Starting September
Angola has announced the implementation of a new national minimum wage, set to begin in September, as part of its efforts to address the rising cost of living and inflation in the country.
The new minimum wage will be 70,000 kwanzas ($80), according to a presidential order published in the official gazette on Friday.
In addition, the government has established a minimum monthly wage of 50,000 kwanzas ($60) for workers in micro enterprises and startups. This move aims to support smaller businesses and ensure fair compensation for employees in emerging sectors.
President João Lourenço confirmed that this adjustment is in response to the increasing prices of basic commodities, especially food, which have significantly impacted the cost of living for Angolan citizens.
“The salary adjustments are occasioned by the current cost of living and the rise in prices of basic commodities, especially food,” he said.
Furthermore, President Lourenço announced that the minimum monthly wage will see another increase to 100,000 kwanzas ($115) in a year’s time, starting from September 2024.
This wage hike follows a recent adjustment three months ago, where the minimum monthly net salary for all civil servants was raised to 100,000 kwanzas ($115).
