Lusaka Mayor Orders Probe into Alleged Fuel Misappropriation at Council Meeting
During the Third Ordinary Council Meeting held at the Civic Centre, Lusaka Mayor Chilando Chitangala addressed serious allegations of fuel misappropriation within the Council.
The Audit and Risk Committee Chairperson, Councillor Hon. Mainda Simataa of Kamwala Ward, presented an executive summary report citing the alleged looting of over 50,000 litres of Council fuel stocks valued at more than K1.5 million between January and June 2023.
Mayor Chitangala emphasized the gravity of the allegations, implicating certain officials of the Local Authority. “Upholding integrity and accountability is paramount to our mandate of serving Lusaka residents and the country at large,” stated Mayor Chitangala.
In response to the report, the Mayor announced a thorough and impartial investigation to establish the facts. “Audits are routine exercises aimed at providing checks and balances on the financial activities of the Local Authority,” Mayor Chitangala reassured the public.
She further underscored the Council’s zero-tolerance stance against corruption, affirming that if the allegations are substantiated, appropriate actions will be taken in accordance with internal disciplinary procedures.
“My Council remains committed to addressing critical matters related to service delivery,” Mayor Chitangala added.
Members of the public were urged to await the outcome of the investigation, with assurances that transparency would prevail once the investigations are concluded.
