Govt Ensures Support for Persons with Disabilities During Humanitarian Crises
The Zambian Government has assured persons with disabilities of its unwavering support, particularly during humanitarian crises such as the ongoing drought emergency affecting the country.
The Ministry of Community Development and Social Services’ Permanent Secretary, Ms. Angela Kawandami, highlighted the vulnerability of persons with disabilities during crises.
She emphasized the need for enhanced support while speaking at a meeting with the Persons with Disabilities Networking group from Muchinga Province. The group was led by its chairperson, Mr. Godwin Mubanga.
During the meeting, which also included Cabinet Office Permanent Secretary for Special Duties, Mr. Kennedy Kalunga, several key issues were discussed. These included socioeconomic inclusion in education, health, agriculture, and other areas.
The Government pledged to strengthen existing systems to ensure more efficient and effective responses to the needs of persons with disabilities.
Ms. Kawandami mentioned that the Government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, is exploring ways to prioritize learners with disabilities. This includes considering a cash allowance for these learners to support their education.
Mr. Kalunga reiterated the Government’s commitment to a one-government approach. He assured that persons with disabilities would be integrated into various socioeconomic sectors, enabling them to contribute equally to national development.
He emphasized that the New Dawn administration is committed to leaving no one behind.
Mr. Godwin Mubanga, chairperson of the Persons with Disabilities Networking group, expressed gratitude for the Government’s dedication to addressing issues faced by persons with disabilities.
He hoped that the discussions would lead to positive outcomes and improve their welfare.
