TI-Z Raises Concerns Over Increasing Abuse of Protected Areas

Transparency International Zambia (TI-Z) has expressed deep concern over recent reports revealing encroachments into Lusaka National Park, allegedly facilitated by collusion between officials from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Lusaka City Council. This troubling development was highlighted in a recent publication by News Diggers.

Mr. Maurice K. Nyambe, Executive Director of TI-Z, emphasized the critical importance of land as a resource essential for both human survival and wildlife habitats. “National parks, including the one in question, are vital not only for wildlife but also as crucial water recharge zones,” he stated.

Mr. Nyambe lamented the decline in citizen integrity and responsibility towards environmental protection, attributing the rise in encroachments to unchecked and irresponsible actions by ministries and land management agencies.

He referenced past incidents such as the Forest 27 invasion, which has had adverse effects on downstream communities in Chongwe.

“It is evident that self-serving individuals exploit systemic weaknesses to acquire land titles with impunity,” Mr. Nyambe noted, underscoring TI-Z’s belief that without accountability, the cycle of land abuse will persist, endangering both the environment and societal well-being.

TI-Z fully supports the Minister of Land and Natural Resources’ intention to initiate a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure all involved parties face justice.

Mr. Nyambe urged swift action to address systemic issues in land administration and management, calling for transparent and efficient investigations to expose and rectify malpractice.

“TI-Z remains committed to advocating for transparency, accountability, and responsible stewardship of our natural resources,” Mr. Nyambe reaffirmed. “We will continue to ensure that our national heritage is preserved for the benefit of present and future generations.”
