Hosted with support from the United Nations, the gathering saw prominent figures including Ms. Hope Situmbeko, Permanent Secretary Administration, Ministry of Finance and National Planning Permanent Secretary – Planning and Administration Ms. Lois Mulube, and UNDP Resident Representative Mr. James Wakiaga.
Ms. Situmbeko, in her welcome address, highlighted the significance of the Summit of the Future, slated for 22nd to 23rd September 2024 in New York.
Building on the momentum of the 2023 Sustainable Development Goals Summit, she underscored the summit’s focus on pivotal areas such as Sustainable Development and Financing, International Peace and Security, and Youth and Future Generations.
“This summit is pivotal for Zambia’s future,” Ms. Situmbeko remarked, stressing the need for comprehensive national preparation to ensure meaningful contributions on the global stage.
She urged participants to foster collaboration that transcends local and regional boundaries, echoing sentiments shared by Ms. Mulube, who emphasised Zambia’s goal of bolstering its global networks and partnerships.
UNDP’s Mr. Wakiaga echoed these sentiments, noting the summit’s potential to mobilise resources crucial for sustainable development amidst mounting challenges like climate change and economic pressures.
“Zambia’s active participation is vital to shaping global discourse,” he affirmed, advocating for a unified stance in the final declaration of the Summit of the Future.
The upcoming summit, a landmark event spurred by the UN’s 75th Anniversary Declaration, aims to foster a new international consensus on global issues, marking a pivotal moment for Zambia and the global community alike.
