UNECE Commends Zambia’s Efforts Towards Food Security; Vice President Nalumango Expresses Gratitude
In a recent meeting held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) commended the Zambian government’s efforts to enhance food security.
This commendation was conveyed by UNECE Deputy Executive Secretary Dmitry Mariyasin during a discussion with Zambian Vice President Mutale Nalumango.
Mariyasin praised Zambia’s leadership and highlighted the technical support provided by the UNECE following Zambia’s request to join the Congo Commission. This support aligns with the broader UN initiative to assist Zambia in preserving and protecting its freshwater resources.
“We really appreciate your leadership,” Mariyasin remarked. “We humbly hope that perhaps the next meeting of the parties of the convention, which will take place in Slovenia in October this year, could be an occasion for Zambia to announce the succession. However, the timeline is entirely the prerogative of the government to decide. We will be on standby to support the next steps.”
Vice President Nalumango expressed Zambia’s gratitude for UNECE’s assistance in tackling the country’s freshwater challenges. She emphasised the critical importance of water to Zambia and the collaborative efforts between the two parties to address this issue.
“We appreciate the support that you have given us regarding water,” Vice President Nalumango stated. “The freshwater challenge is significant, and I think you have seen what we have been striving to achieve as a country.”
The UNECE’s commendation comes at a time when Zambia has been grappling with the adverse effects of regional droughts. In response, the Zambian government has intensified its efforts to ensure the nation has sufficient access to food, thereby bolstering food security.
