2024 Malawi Investment and Trade Forum Cancelled in Tanzania
The 2024 Malawi Investment and Trade Forum, aimed at exploring opportunities for Malawi’s progress across various sectors, has been cancelled in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Andrew Kumwenda, Malawi’s High Commissioner in Tanzania, announced the cancellation to delegates gathered at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
He expressed regret and informed attendees that new dates would be announced in due course.
The cancellation was attributed to the tragic death of Malawi’s Vice President, Dr Saulos Chilima, and eight others in a plane crash on June 10, 2024, in Chikangawa Forest, Mzimba.
The loss prompted the Malawian government to declare 21 days of mourning in honour of the late Vice President and the other officials.
Despite drawing local and international experts in sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, mining, technology, and tourism, the forum lasted only a few minutes before delegates parted ways.
The cancellation aligns with the government’s mourning period following the devastating plane crash.
The Dornier 228 aircraft carrying the officials went missing over the Chikangawa Forest Reserve, with wreckage confirmed on June 11, 2024.
