President Hakainde Hichilema Honors Freedom Fighters on Africa Freedom Day’s 60th Anniversary

In a ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of Africa Freedom Day, President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia led dignitaries and government officials in commemorating the historic occasion. 

The event, held at the iconic Freedom Statue in Lusaka, was a solemn tribute to the sacrifices made by countless individuals in the struggle for independence across the African continent.

Under the theme “Educate and Skill Africa for the 21st Century,” President Hichilema emphasized the importance of building resilient education systems to ensure increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning opportunities for all Africans.

Joined by Her Honour, Deputy Mayor Ketty Nanyangwe, President Hichilema laid wreaths at the Freedom Statue, symbolizing solidarity and reverence for the brave soldiers who fought for Zambia’s independence and the liberation of Africa as a whole.

The commemorative ceremony later moved to the State House, where President Hichilema and First Lady Mutinta Hichilema presided over the Awarding Investiture Ceremony. 

This ceremony, a highlight of the day’s events, honored deserving freedom fighters for their significant contributions to the nation.

Among the distinguished recipients was Mr. Yonha Mwale, Commandant at the Zambia National Fire Service Training School in Kabwe, and Mr. Robert Banda, Deputy Chief Fire Officer.

Both individuals were recognized for their unwavering dedication to enhancing quality service delivery and saving lives.

In a gesture of gratitude, President Hichilema personally presented the awards to the honorees, acknowledging their selfless commitment to the country’s progress and prosperity.

Bwalya Kalimanshi, Public Relations Officer for the Lusaka City Council, lauded the event’s significance, emphasizing the importance of honoring those who have dedicated their lives to the service of Zambia and the African continent.
