UN Demands Justice After Deadly Bombings in DR Congo
The UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) is calling for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for last Friday’s bombings in Goma, North Kivu Province.
The attacks targeted displaced persons’ camps, killing at least 10 civilians, including children, according to provisional reports.
MONUSCO strongly condemned the bombings and urged the Congolese government to take swift action.
“The Special Representative calls on the Congolese authorities to take all necessary measures to bring to justice the perpetrators of these heinous acts, which are a flagrant violation of human rights,” said Bintou Keita, UN Special Representative in the DR Congo.
Bintou Keita also reiterated the UN’s commitment to supporting peace and stability in eastern DRC.
She urged armed groups to immediately cease all hostilities against civilians.
The bombings highlight the ongoing violence plaguing eastern Congo, where numerous armed groups operate.
The UN has long called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, but progress has been slow.
