Zambia Unveils New Solar Power Plant, Boosting Renewable Energy Efforts
The Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) has inaugurated the 60-megawatt Itimpi Solar Photovoltaic Power Station in Kitwe, Zambia. This significant development marks a major step towards sustainable energy production in the country.
President Hakainde Hichilema himself officiated at the commissioning ceremony, highlighting the project’s contribution to Zambia’s goal of generating a diversified electricity mix.
He emphasized the importance of the Itimpi plant as a national asset that will fuel economic growth.
CEC leadership echoed the president’s sentiments. Board Chairperson, Mr. London Mwafulilwa, stressed the company’s commitment to working with the government and industry partners to advance the electricity sector and support Zambia’s socio-economic development.
Managing Director, Mr. Owen Silavwe, pointed out that the combined output of Itimpi and CEC’s existing solar plants will reach 186 GWh annually.
The Itimpi plant boasts several impressive features. It boasts an annual generation capacity of 130 GWh and utilizes tracking technology to maximize efficiency. The plant covers 80 hectares and harnesses the power of the sun through over 109,000 solar modules and 200 inverters.
This environmentally friendly project is expected to offset a substantial amount of carbon emissions each year – 122,000 tonnes to be exact. This aligns with Zambia’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint as outlined in its Nationally Determined Contribution.
The construction of the Itimpi plant not only benefits the environment but also the Zambian economy. The project, financed through a Green Bond listed on the Lusaka Securities Exchange, created over 1,200 jobs during construction.
Additionally, CEC collaborated with the Forestry Department to provide income opportunities for local wood merchants through the clearing of land for the plant’s construction.
