Copper Queens Secure Olympic Qualification, Zambia Set for Paris 2024
The Zambian Football Association (FAZ) is celebrating the Copper Queens’ qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The team secured their spot after defeating Morocco 3-2 on aggregate in the final qualifying round.
FAZ president Andrew Kamanga praised the team’s “never die spirit” for overcoming a first-leg deficit and securing their second consecutive Olympic appearance.
This achievement marks the culmination of a long-term project by Kamanga’s executive to develop women’s football in Zambia.
“We have invested heavily in the growth of women’s football in the last six years,” Kamanga said. “These results help reinvigorate our resolve to invest more in the grassroots level.”
He highlighted the Copper Queens’ impressive record in recent years, including three Africa Cup of Nations qualifications (2018, 2022, 2024), participation in the first-ever Women’s World Cup (2023), and a bronze medal at the 2022 WAFCON.
Kamanga assured the team of FAZ’s commitment to providing adequate preparation for the Olympics, which kick off in July.
He emphasized that the FAZ will follow their established routine of organizing high-quality training sessions to ensure the Copper Queens are in top form for the competition.
Zambia joins Nigeria as the only two African representatives in the women’s football tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
