ICLEI Delegation Meets Lusaka Mayor to Enhance Climate Resilience Initiatives
ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, a global network dedicated to sustainable urban development, convened a high-level meeting with Ms. Chilando Chitangala, the Mayor of Lusaka, aiming to bolster climate resilience efforts.
The visiting team, comprising Lucy Lavirotte and Dylan Beuaes from ICLEI Africa, engaged Mayor Chitangala to discuss collaborative strategies ahead of a forthcoming workshop focused on climate change management.
During the deliberations, the ICLEI representatives outlined their two-year partnership with the Lusaka City Council (LCC), emphasizing their objective to identify climate-related hazards and implement interventions to mitigate challenges such as cholera outbreaks.
Their overarching goal is to foster resilience within communities through a comprehensive, multi-sectoral approach.
In addition to climate change resilience, ICLEI’s diverse portfolio includes initiatives addressing climate and development finance, urban nature conservation, health and well-being, integrated urban water management, sustainable sanitation solutions, and systems approaches for sustainable infrastructure development.
Mayor Chitangala, who also chairs the ICLEI Regional Executive Committee, reaffirmed her commitment to collaborating with the ICLEI team.
She underscored the urgent need for concerted action to combat the adverse effects of climate change, citing the recent drought in Zambia, which has devastated crop yields and livelihoods across the country, as a poignant example.
Bwalya Funga, Senior Community Development Officer at the Lusaka City Council, was present during the meeting, demonstrating the local government’s engagement and support for collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing climate resilience in the region.
