Zambia Opens New Research Hub to Boost Agriculture Innovation

President Hakainde Hichilema officially commissioned the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) facilities in Lusaka Province today.

The new research hub, located in the Ngwerere area of Chongwe District, marks a significant investment in Zambia’s agricultural future.

President Hichilema emphasized the government’s prioritization of agricultural productivity.

He highlighted the importance of research in developing improved crop varieties that can withstand the challenges of climate change and deliver high yields.

The President expressed his appreciation for IITA’s research efforts to tackle hunger, malnutrition, poverty, and environmental degradation.

He specifically mentioned the institute’s focus on diversifying agricultural production to provide Zambians with a wider range of food options and reduce reliance on maize.

The IITA innovations are designed to attract young people to the agricultural sector.

This approach aims to create new employment opportunities within the agriculture value chain.

President Hichilema concluded by extending an invitation to all Zambians to get involved in the agricultural sector.
