Education Minister  Highlights Sports as Catalyst for Unity and Development at ZUSA Open Games

Education Minister Hon. Douglas Syakalima underscored the pivotal role of sports in fostering unity, development, and essential life skills in an inspiring address at the 2024 Zambia University Sport Association (ZUSA) open games. 

The event, hosted at Mulungushi University in Kapiri Mposhi, brought together 18 universities with approximately 1,400 students showcasing their athletic prowess.

Minister Syakalima emphasized that sports serve as a powerful tool for nurturing not only physical health but also crucial values such as teamwork, resilience, and determination. 

He expressed that through sports, individuals can transcend boundaries, fostering mutual respect and understanding among people from diverse backgrounds.

“Sport serves as a unifying force that bridges divides and fosters mutual respect and understanding among individuals from various backgrounds,” remarked Hon. Syakalima during his address. 

He further reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to supporting initiatives that promote sports development across all levels, including within universities.

Investing in sports education and infrastructure remains a top priority for the government, as highlighted by Minister Syakalima. He emphasized that such investments ensure a future of healthy and well-equipped individuals poised for success. 

The theme of “Unity in diversity celebrating Athletic Excellence” encapsulated the spirit of the games, reflecting the inclusive nature of sports and the pursuit of excellence regardless of differences.

ZUSA President John Mukombwe echoed Minister Syakalima’s sentiments, expressing gratitude for the government’s role in providing an enabling environment for students to thrive in sports. 

The collaborative efforts between educational institutions and governmental support have created a platform for students to excel not only academically but also athletically, fostering holistic development.
