Emirates Implements Sustainable Aviation Fuel Agreement at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport
Emirates Airlines has initiated the implementation of its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) agreement with Neste at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, marking a significant step in the airline’s sustainability efforts.
Throughout 2024, Emirates plans to introduce over 2 million gallons of blended SAF into Schiphol Airport’s fuelling system, with a portion of over 700,000 gallons being neat SAF.
This partnership with Neste, one of the largest volumes of SAF purchased by Emirates, underscores the airline’s commitment to reducing emissions and fostering sustainability in air travel. Adel Al Redha, Deputy President and Chief Operations Officer of Emirates, emphasized the importance of collaborations like this in advancing the airline’s sustainability goals.
Alexander Kueper, Vice President Renewable Aviation at Neste, expressed pride in supporting Emirates’ sustainability journey and highlighted SAF as a crucial solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in air travel.
He noted the significance of Emirates’ adoption of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol as a step toward accelerating SAF usage.
SAF used in this agreement meets safety standards for existing jet engines and airport fuelling infrastructure. It significantly reduces lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel, demonstrating its potential to mitigate environmental impact.
Emirates has been progressively integrating SAF into its operations, with previous flights powered by SAF blended with jet fuel from various locations.
The airline’s involvement in initiatives like the Solent Cluster in the UK and collaboration with stakeholders in the UAE further exemplify its dedication to advancing sustainable aviation fuel technologies.
Through participation in industry consortia and engagement with government and regulatory bodies, Emirates aims to contribute to the scaling of SAF production and supply.
The airline’s involvement in research consortium Air-CRAFT underscores its commitment to developing and scaling sustainable aviation fuel technologies.
Emirates’ efforts align with global initiatives to reduce the aviation industry’s environmental footprint, reflecting a proactive approach toward achieving sustainability goals in air travel.
