Vedanta-Konkola Copper Mines Launches CSR Initiatives in Chililabombwe
Vedanta-Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has taken a proactive step towards community development with the launch of several Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives aimed at uplifting the educational and hygienic standards in Chililabombwe district.
The occasion, graced by the esteemed presence of area Member of Parliament, Honorable Kabuswe, saw the donation of sanitary pads and detergents to eight schools in the district.
Vedanta Resources Corporate and Communications Director, Masuzyo Ndhlovu, expressed the company’s commitment to menstrual hygiene awareness through this donation, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives in promoting a healthy learning environment.
Mr. Ndhlovu reiterated Vedanta’s dedication to fostering good hygiene practices in schools, highlighting the need to prevent a recurrence of the cholera outbreak that previously afflicted the nation. The donation of detergents serves as a practical measure to instill cleanliness habits among students, safeguarding their health and well-being.
In a significant announcement, Mr. Ndhlovu unveiled Vedanta’s forthcoming plans to implement CSR programs through the establishment of a Community Trust, facilitated by Konkola Copper Mines. This Trust will serve as a dedicated platform for executing impactful projects tailored to address the specific needs of communities within KCM’s operational areas.
Explaining the rationale behind the Community Trust, Mr. Ndhlovu emphasized its role in driving sustainable development and supporting micro-projects that enhance the livelihoods of local residents.
A substantial investment of US$20 million has been earmarked for CSR initiatives spanning Chililabombwe, Chingola, Kitwe, and Nampundwe, underscoring Vedanta’s commitment to making a tangible difference in these regions.
Looking ahead, Mr. Ndhlovu reaffirmed Vedanta’s unwavering dedication to national development, pledging to continue its role as a catalyst for positive economic and social change in Zambia.
He emphasized the paramount importance of KCM’s future to Vedanta Resources, outlining the company’s holistic approach to stakeholder engagement, which encompasses employees, families, business partners, suppliers, and the wider community.
