Ttelecommunications giant MTN Group and technology powerhouse Huawei signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Joint Innovation Technology Lab,  aimed at deepening cooperation in technological innovation.

Amidst the bustling atmosphere of the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, Mazen Mroué, MTN Group’s Chief Technology and Information Officer, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration.

He emphasized the broader implications of this partnership, stating, “The Joint Innovation Technology Lab is more than a partnership between two companies; it’s an investment in the growth of Africa’s digital ecosystem.”

The collaborative endeavor will see the creation of an Innovation Technology Lab at MTN Group’s headquarters in South Africa, serving as a nexus for collaboration within Africa’s digital landscape. This initiative aims to expedite the development, deployment, and adoption of innovative digital solutions tailored to the continent’s needs.

Li Peng, Huawei’s Corporate Senior Vice President and President of ICT Sales & Service, echoed Mroué’s sentiments, affirming Huawei’s commitment to innovation alongside MTN. “Huawei will continue innovating with MTN to ensure they have the products and solutions required to best serve Africa’s unique market,” said Peng.

The strategic partnership will focus on key technological domains including 5G and beyond, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data analytics, cloud computing, and digital financial services.

By leveraging their combined expertise, MTN and Huawei aspire to accelerate the time-to-market of MTN’s offerings while addressing Africa’s specific challenges such as rural network coverage, energy efficiency, and affordability.

This collaboration underscores the shared commitment of both companies to shape Africa’s digital landscape, fostering innovation, digital inclusion, and economic growth. It represents a significant step towards harnessing technology for the benefit of Africa’s burgeoning digital economy.
