German Firm Initiates 100 MW Solar Project in Zambia

7YRDS Group, a prominent German company, has announced a significant investment of USD 100 million into Zambia’s renewable energy sector. The company is set to establish two solar projects in Kafue and Sesheke, with a combined capacity of 100MW.

Mr. Philip Janssen, Founder and CEO of 7YRDS Group, revealed this development during a courtesy call to the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA).

Accompanying Mr. Janssen were key representatives including Mr. Noah Mewes, Managing Director of 7YRDS Group, Mr. Brandon Imataa, Managing Director of Sevenyards Zambia, and Bibusa Wissemann, Managing Director and Consultant of Africa GreenTec Zambia.

The purpose of the visit was to update ZDA on the progress of the project implementation and to seek guidance on activating investment incentives facilitated by the Agency.

Mr. Janssen confirmed that each project would yield 50 megawatts and is scheduled for commissioning in the first quarter of 2025, creating approximately 1000 jobs from construction to operational phases.

Feasibility studies have been completed, with environmental impact assessments currently underway, stated Mr. Janssen.

Additionally, Bibusa Wissemann of Africa GreenTec Zambia attributed the project’s inception to the visit of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Zambia in November last year.

Albert Halwampa, Director General of ZDA, emphasized Zambia’s increasing energy demand, driven by growth in the mining and agricultural sectors.

He assured the delegation that the generated power would be utilized domestically or internationally, positioning Zambia as a potential net exporter of energy in the region.

Mr. Halwampa highlighted the conducive business environment under President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration, fostering trade and investment.

He reiterated Zambia’s attractiveness for investments in various sectors, including mining, agriculture, and transportation, such as the Lobito corridor project.

In response, Mr. Halwampa assured the investors of ZDA’s continuous support throughout their investment journey, reflecting Zambia’s commitment to fostering sustainable economic growth through renewable energy initiatives.
