President Hichilema Holds Bilateral Talks with Ghanaian Foreign Minister

President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia welcomed Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of the Republic of Ghana, at State House in Lusaka, where they engaged in fruitful discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral relations and cooperation between the two nations.

During the meeting, Hon. Botchwey delivered a special message from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana to President Hichilema, highlighting the enduring friendship and historical ties between Zambia and Ghana, rooted in the continent’s liberation struggle with iconic leaders such as Dr. Kenneth Kaunda and Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

President Hichilema acknowledged the longstanding relations between Zambia and Ghana and reflected on the State Visit to Ghana initiated in 2023, emphasizing the importance of joint investment projects and the need to implement signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between the two countries.

Furthermore, President Hichilema expressed gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for nominating Hon. Botchwey as Ghana’s candidate for the position of Commonwealth Secretary General, highlighting the importance of African women’s participation in key positions and advocating for Africa’s representation in global decision-making processes.

In response, Hon. Botchwey conveyed warm greetings from President Akufo-Addo and reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Zambia, emphasizing the importance of finalizing pending MoUs and implementing agreed decisions to foster mutual cooperation and benefit.

Prior to the meeting at State House, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, SC, M.P, held discussions with Hon. Botchwey at Charter House in Lusaka, where two Memoranda of Understanding were signed. 

These agreements aim to establish a political consultation mechanism and promote bilateral cooperation across various domains, including political, economic, commercial, scientific, technical, and cultural areas. 

Additionally, the agreements seek to enhance defense cooperation and development programs in alignment with the respective domestic laws of both countries.
