Zambian President Hosts European Union Delegation  

President Hakainde Hichilema welcomed a delegation from the European Union Elections Follow-up Mission at State House this morning. 

The meeting aimed to discuss and reinforce the collaborative efforts between Zambia and the European Union in promoting and strengthening democratic principles.

Expressing gratitude for the EU’s role in enhancing democracy globally, President Hichilema underscored the importance of such partnerships in fostering good governance. 

He emphasized Zambia’s commitment to promoting democratic values, not only within the African continent but on a global scale.

During the discussions, President Hichilema highlighted specific steps taken by the Zambian government to open civic space and strengthen democratic institutions. 

These measures include the abolition of the death penalty, the enactment of the Access to Information Act, and the removal of the Criminal Defamation of the President law, among others.

The President acknowledged the shared vision with the EU for Zambia to conduct peaceful and transparent elections in 2026. 

He assured the delegation that the government is dedicated to ensuring the electoral process meets international standards. 

President Hichilema emphasized that the commitment to transparent elections is driven by the collective interests of the Zambian people and not to appease external entities.

“We appreciate their desire for Zambia to hold peaceful and transparent elections in 2026, and we have assured them it will be done, emphasizing that we are doing this for us and not to please anyone,” stated President Hichilema.

He further emphasized that a flourishing democracy is crucial for the growth of Zambia, impacting various sectors, including the economy. 

The President’s assurance aligns with the broader goal of establishing Zambia as a beacon of democratic governance in the region.

The meeting concluded with mutual appreciation for the ongoing collaboration between Zambia and the European Union. 

The President expressed optimism about the continued partnership, recognizing the pivotal role that strong democratic foundations play in shaping the nation’s future.
