President Andry Nirina Rajoelina Inaugurated for Second Term Following Landslide Victory
His Excellency Andry Nirina Rajoelina, President of the Republic of Madagascar, was inaugurated on December 16th, 2023, after securing a decisive re-election in the First Round of the Presidential Election held on November 16th, 2023.
The inauguration event witnessed an immense turnout of Malagasy citizens and esteemed foreign dignitaries, including Heads of State and Government from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, along with their representatives.
Taking the oath of office, President Rajoelina outlined his vision for Madagascar’s future, pledging a strong commitment to propel the nation towards prosperity. Emphasizing human capital development, industrialization, and good governance, he outlined key priorities for the next five years of his administration.
Addressing the nation, H.E. President Rajoelina expressed gratitude to the Malagasy people for their peaceful conduct during the election process. He vowed to unite the people of Madagascar, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts for the country’s progress.
The High Constitutional Court of the Republic of Madagascar, entrusted with the constitutional mandate to declare final election results, officially announced that President Rajoelina secured a significant 58.96% of the total votes.
President Rajoelina, who previously served as the president of a provisional government from 2009 to 2014, had also held the position of Mayor of Antananarivo for one year. His first term in office commenced in 2019 and has now been extended with this re-election.
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) played a pivotal role in ensuring the transparency and fairness of the electoral process. The SADC deployed the Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) to monitor the Presidential Election in Madagascar, aligning with Article 3 of the revised SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections (2021).
The successful and peaceful conduct of the elections has been lauded as a testament to the democratic principles upheld in Madagascar.
