Kansanshi Mining Plc Raises Over $10,000 for Cancer Awareness in Zambia
Kansanshi Mining Plc has demonstrated significant philanthropy by successfully raising over US$10,000 to support cancer awareness programs in Zambia.
The funds were generated through the annual charity golf tournament organized by the Kansanshi Golf Club, drawing sponsorship from 20 companies contracted by the mines.
Anthony Mukutuma, the general manager of Kansanshi Mining Plc, expressed gratitude to the various companies for their generous contributions and announced that the raised funds would be donated to the Zambian Cancer Society.
Established in 2009, the society plays a crucial role in bolstering the nation’s fight against cancer.
Mukutuma highlighted the mining giant’s commitment to supporting the Zambian Cancer Society since 2018, providing essential aid to both cancer patients and caregivers.
He revealed that the society had been able to acquire its first plot in Chongwe, with plans to build a facility aimed at providing care for both caregivers and cancer patients.
“Cancer is a deadly disease but can be treated if detected early,” emphasized Mr. Mukutuma, stressing the importance of early detection and intervention in effectively combating the disease.
Chanda Matipa, the Cancer Smart Youth Coordinator for the Copperbelt region at the Zambian Cancer Society, expressed gratitude to Kansanshi Mining for organizing the charity golf tournament.
Mr. Matipa highlighted the collaborative efforts between the government and society to implement policies that strengthen the nation’s overall fight against cancer.
He noted that the Cancer Diseases Hospital in Lusaka is currently overwhelmed with patients and caregivers, making the funds raised crucial in supporting and alleviating the strain on healthcare facilities.
Calling for increased awareness on cancer, Mr. Matipa urged people to undergo early testing, emphasizing the impact of early detection on improving treatment outcomes.
Riana La Grange, the Kansanshi Golf Club ladies captain, expressed happiness and appreciation for the strong support received from numerous companies that participated in the event.
La Grange credited the success of raising over US$10,000 to the dedication of sponsors, including companies such as Bafokeng Hydraulics, Toyota, Spectra Oil, MeLongteng, Olibul Investment Reliant Mining, Liebherr, Cummins, AMSI, Tri Pump, BIA, Orica, Platinum Hydraulics, and Synite Quarries.
The funds raised through this initiative will undoubtedly contribute significantly to ongoing efforts in cancer awareness and support for patients in Zambia. The collaborative spirit demonstrated by Kansanshi Mining and its partners underscores the positive impact that the business community can have on critical social issues.
