MTN South Africa and Huawei Recognized as ‘Sustainability Champions’ at AfricaCom Awards
MTN South Africa and Huawei have been honored with the prestigious “Sustainability Champion of the Year” award at the AfricaCom Awards, the largest annual event in the African communications industry.
The award specifically acknowledges the collaborative effort of MTN South Africa and Huawei in developing flexible green site solutions, particularly crucial in the context of South Africa’s ongoing power crisis.
The solution employs green and intelligent technologies for end-to-end site reconstruction, addressing power supply, distribution, load, and intelligent operations and maintenance (O&M).
Notably, the solution has proven highly adaptable to power outages and weak power grids, ensuring more than 98% energy availability at sites.
Huawei’s advanced OWS+NetEco intelligent O&M platform, incorporating AI technologies for solar, mains, and diesel power supply, further enhances the efficiency of the solution.
Due to its success in South Africa, this innovative solution is set to be expanded to other countries facing similar challenges, including Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, and Kenya, where power shortages are prevalent.
Beyond addressing critical infrastructure needs, the partnership between MTN and Huawei has played a crucial role in advancing MTN’s net-zero goals.
Zoltan Miklos, General Manager of Access and Architecture at MTN South Africa, highlighted the collaborative nature of the partnership, stating, “As the strategic partner of MTN SA, Huawei provides in-depth site insights based on its powerful R&D innovation, product supply capabilities, and professional local service team.”
Diego Dong, from Huawei, emphasized the urgency of resilient and intelligent networks in the face of South Africa’s load-shedding crisis, noting that the collaboration actively works on Green ICT innovation to build intelligent, green, and simplified sites for a highly reliable network and an optimal user experience.
This recognition at AfricaCom reinforces the commitment of MTN South Africa and Huawei to sustainable and innovative solutions that address pressing challenges in the telecom industry, contributing significantly to the realization of a connected, intelligent, and green future.
