Zambian Breweries Launches 2023 Sorghum Planting Season in Zimba

Zambian Breweries (ZB), the nation’s largest brewer, officially inaugurated the 2023-24 sorghum planting season in Zimba, Southern Province, Zambia, underscoring its commitment to sustainability and supporting local farmers.

The event, attended by stakeholders, Ministry of Agriculture representatives, and Zimba farmers, marked the commencement of a collaborative effort to encourage conservation farming for enhanced yields.

Alfred Sianjase, District Agricultural Coordinator from the Ministry of Agriculture, highlighted the government’s aspiration to transform small-scale farming in the area into sustainable businesses.

He emphasized the economic benefits of sorghum farming, particularly in Zimba, and encouraged farmers to capitalize on the opportunity presented by Zambian Breweries.

ZB’s partnership with 200 farmers in the region, initiated five years ago, has grown into a program benefitting over 1500 farmers. Through conservation farming practices, these farmers receive essential inputs and skills, contributing to modern agriculture and ensuring a reliable market for their produce.

Eagle Lager, known for its quality and affordability, relies on cassava and white-grained sorghum as primary ingredients. ZB’s sorghum program not only secures the supply of these crucial ingredients but also supports the local farming community in Zimba, providing a vital lifeline.

Tawanda Hojane, Zambian Breweries Legal and Corporate Affairs Director, emphasized the significance of sorghum in Zambia’s agricultural landscape.

He recognized the crucial role played by local farmers in maintaining the quality standards of Eagle Lager beer.

The collaboration between Zambian Breweries and local farmers extends beyond the planting season, encompassing quality management training, provision of quality seeds, and financial literacy. This holistic approach strengthens the supply value chain, promoting sustainable and inclusive growth.

Zambian Breweries purchases over 4000 metric tonnes of sorghum from local farmers each harvest season, contributing to the production of Eagle Lager. This practice not only supports local farmers but also fosters financial inclusion in rural areas.

Addressing climate change in the agricultural sector, Zambian Breweries has partnered with organizations like the World Food Programme (WFP), GRIFFIN, and Silverlands Zambia Limited. Sorghum, known for its climate resilience, aligns with the company’s commitment to the United Nations’ 2025 Sustainable Development Goals.

Christopher Nicolle, Zambian Breweries Agriculture Manager, commended Zimba farmers for their dedication to conservation farming, emphasizing its role in successful crop yields. Conservation farming, coupled with the drought-tolerant nature of white sorghum, enhances the sustainability of farmers’ operations.

Ernest Kapalanga, a Zimba farmer, shared his positive experience with conservation farming, highlighting its benefits in preserving moisture and minimizing challenges in crop cultivation.

The launch of the sorghum planting season signifies Zambian Breweries’ ongoing efforts to promote sustainable agriculture, rural development, and community empowerment in Zambia.
