Tragic Infant Death in Chirundu District

In Chirundu District, Zambia, police are actively searching for a woman known only as bamake Linos in connection with the tragic death of an eight-month-old child named Emmanuel Siabasimbi. It is believed that the woman caused the child’s death while attempting to perform a procedure to correct an inborn condition known as “tongue tie” locally referred to as ‘kalimba.’ The child is suspected to have died due to excessive bleeding resulting from the unsuccessful procedure.

In a statement issued by Danny Mwale, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, the incident took place on September 29, 2023, at around 06:00 hours in Apollo compound in Chirundu District. Preliminary investigations by the police reveal that Mr. and Mrs. Siabasimbi had decided to seek help from this woman after discovering that their child was suffering from tongue tie. 

Tragically, during the procedure, the baby bled profusely. The parents rushed the child to Mtendere Mission Hospital, where the baby was pronounced dead upon arrival. The body is currently in the hospital mortuary, awaiting a postmortem examination.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident, the police conducted a night operation in Lusaka’s Central Business District between September 29, 2023, at around 22:00 hours and September 30, 2023, at 01:30 hours. 

During this operation, 48 individuals were arrested for loitering. Some of the suspects were found in possession of property believed to have been stolen, while others were in possession of suspected psychotropic substances. The suspects, all males aged between 13 and 38, are currently in custody awaiting formal charges.

In Chadiza District, police received a report of a drowning incident in which a 32-year-old man, identified as Muntunduwata Phiri, was reported to have drowned in Nsadzu Dam. Police officers and firefighters rushed to the scene to search for the body, but it had not been retrieved as of the last report. 

Witnesses reported that Phiri had been seen swimming in the dam by other fishermen and subsequently shouted for help when he ventured into deeper waters. This incident occurred on September 29, 2023, at around 13:00 hours, and the search for the missing individual is ongoing.
