Ministry of Education Announces 2022/2023 Public Universities Selection Results

The Ministry of Education has declared the conclusion of the 2022/2023 harmonized merit-based public universities selection exercise, which was conducted in collaboration with the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE). Today, the nation eagerly awaited the release of the selection results from the six (6) public universities, setting the course for the future of thousands of aspiring students across the country.

This year’s public university applications witnessed a remarkable milestone, as 100% of the applications were received online. The NCHE received an overwhelming total of 19,760 applications, and out of these, 18,471 applicants met the eligibility criteria. After careful consideration, a total of 8,552 students (5,106 male and 3,446 female) have been selected to join the esteemed public universities in Malawi.

Out of the selected students, 59.7% are male, and 40.3% are female. The figure of 8,552 selected students marks a historic moment, representing a 14.4% increase from last year’s selection of 7,473 students. It is important to note that the final number of students selected for the 2023 academic year will be even higher, as universities continue to consider special needs students and those selected through other modes.

Special needs students are currently undergoing a comprehensive consideration process by the universities, which includes medical examinations. As long as these students meet the minimum entry requirements, consisting of six (6) credits, including English, they will be automatically admitted.

In addition to the selected students, universities will also recruit additional candidates through Open Distance eLearning (ODel.), Economic Fee Paying, and Mature Entry modes of selection.

For students who may have queries or concerns about the selection process, the NCHE has provided a three-week window to submit their queries in writing. The query period will be open from July 19th to Tuesday, August 9th, 2023.

The Ministry of Education extends heartfelt congratulations to all students who have been selected to pursue their higher education dreams in public universities. As they embark on their academic journeys, the ministry wishes them great success and looks forward to witnessing their contributions to the nation’s growth and development.
