Zambia Leads Region in Digital Payment of Social Cash Transfer, World Bank Reports
Zambia has emerged as the top-performing country in the region for its efficient adoption of digital payments for Social Cash Transfer (SCT), according to a recent disclosure by the World Bank.
The transition from physical to digital payment systems, spearheaded by the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, has significantly improved the efficiency, effectiveness, and transparency of social protection service delivery.
During a courtesy call on the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, the World Bank Task Team Leader for the Girls Education Women Empowerment and Livelihoods (GEWEL) Project, Nadia Selim, lauded Zambia’s impressive progress in scaling up digital payments for SCT.
This transition has expedited the implementation progress and garnered praise from international donors.
Under the GEWEL project, the World Bank expressed satisfaction with the implementation of the Supporting Women’s Livelihoods (SWL) and Keeping Girls in School (KGS) initiatives, pledging continued support for their effective implementation.
Ms. Angela Kawandami, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, highlighted the significant milestones achieved, including the support provided to over 139,351 women under the SWL project since its inception in 2016, surpassing the initial target of 129,400 beneficiaries.
Ms. Kawandami commended the World Bank for its ongoing financial and technical support, especially in light of the current drought situation facing the nation.
Zambia stands as a shining example of effective social protection program implementation, showcasing the transformative power of digital payments in advancing social welfare.
