Zambia Pledges Improved Child Justice System, UN Urges Focus on Prevention
The Zambian government has recommitted to improving its child justice system, according to Community Development and Social Services Minister Doreen Mwamba.
Ms. Mwamba highlighted various measures taken to ensure smoother legal processes for children in conflict with the law.
Her comments came during a visit to Katombora Reformatory Centre in Southern Province with Dr. Najat Maalla, the United Nations (UN) Special Representative to the Secretary-General on Violence Against Children.
Minister Mwamba emphasized the government’s swift action in establishing Child Family Friendly Courtrooms and assigning specialized judges to handle children’s cases, addressing the prior lack of dedicated courts for children.
Dr. Maalla, however, urged the government to prioritize preventative measures alongside rehabilitation efforts.
He emphasized that preventing child crime would be more effective in safeguarding children’s well-being.
Dr. Maalla’s visit aimed to strengthen collaboration between the UN and Zambia on child welfare issues.
