Barotse Royal Establishment Induna Inete Murdered in Cold Blood at His Residence
The tranquil village of Salambango was shattered by a gruesome incident as Mr. Mwangelwa Akapelwa, aged 72, the esteemed Barotse Royal Establishment Induna Inete, fell victim to a merciless attack.
The Limulunga Police Station received a distressing report this morning, March 18, 2024, at 08:00 hours, from Mr. Tawila Akapelwa, aged 47, son of the deceased, residing in Salambango Village, Mongu.
According to Mr. Tawila Akapelwa’s account, his father, Mr. Mwangelwa Akapelwa, was fatally shot by unknown assailants wielding an unidentified firearm. The incident unfolded at the family residence while Mr. Mwangelwa Akapelwa was in the midst of securing his Toyota Hilux vehicle, bearing the registration number ALE 3788.
He was ambushed from behind as he sat in the driver’s seat with his right leg poised to exit the vehicle, resulting in a deep gunshot wound to his back.
Investigations led by Mr. Chileshe Mukuka, Commissioner of Police for Western Province, revealed harrowing details surrounding the events leading up to the tragic demise of Mr. Mwangelwa Akapelwa.
On March 17, 2024, at approximately 08:00 hours, the deceased, accompanied by his son, Mr. Chikombo Tawila, aged 19, and son-in-law, Mr. Likomba Imbuwa, aged 42, embarked on a trip to inspect his field in the plains at Lyangei area.
Reports of a snake infestation prompted Mr. Mwangelwa Akapelwa to arm himself with a shotgun for the purpose of extermination. The group returned from the fields at 15:00 hours.
Later in the evening, at around 21:00 hours, Mr. Mwangelwa Akapelwa left his residence with a bag of mealie meal, destination unknown within Limulunga.
He returned at 22:00 hours and, upon arrival, sought the assistance of his niece, Miss Wakunuma Ngenda, aged 20, to open the door. Subsequently, he proceeded to the kitchen with his belongings before returning to the vehicle, where the fatal assault took place.
The sound of gunfire reverberated through the village, initially mistaken for Mr. Mwangelwa Akapelwa firing into the air to deter potential thieves. However, the horrific reality soon unfolded, with Mr. Mwangelwa Akapelwa succumbing to his injuries.
His shotgun was discovered at the trailer of his van, earmarked for ballistic analysis as part of the ongoing investigation to apprehend the perpetrators.
The community of Salambango mourns the loss of a revered figure in Mr. Mwangelwa Akapelwa, whose contributions as the Barotse Royal Establishment Induna Inete will be sorely missed. As authorities intensify efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice, the residents remain vigilant in the wake of this senseless act of violence that has rocked their tranquil existence.
