Minister Nkombo Clarifies Demolition of Munyaule Market in Lusaka
In response to recent press coverage regarding the demolition of Munyaule Market in Lusaka’s Central Business District, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Gary Nkombo, MP, issued a statement today, March 5th, 2024.
Minister Nkombo clarified that the decision to lease out Munyaule Market was made during a full council meeting held on June 28th, 2019, and a 15-year lease agreement was subsequently signed between the Lusaka City Council and Kaddoura Construction Limited, a privately-owned company tasked with constructing the market.
However, construction was delayed due to resistance from vendors and traders who refused to vacate the premises. Despite repeated efforts to engage with the traders and provide alternative trading spaces, they remained defiant, leading to the issuance of notices to relocate.
The Minister emphasized that the relocation of traders aims to enhance market infrastructure and create a more conducive trading environment, particularly in light of health concerns such as cholera outbreaks. He clarified that the correct number of affected traders is 920, not the previously reported 4000.
To accommodate the affected traders, the council has secured temporary trading spaces behind BH and New Soweto markets, along with spaces along Lumumba Road and at City Market. Additionally, Kaddoura Construction Limited has provided offer letters to the evicted traders, ensuring priority access to the new market upon its completion.
The Minister assured the public that the government is committed to providing a safe and clean environment for traders and shoppers alike, and that the Munyaule Market project is a continuation of initiatives begun by the previous administration.
The statement by Minister Nkombo aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding the demolition of Munyaule Market and reassure affected traders of the government’s support during this transition period.
