Zambia Explores Bilateral Collaboration with Sweden and Finland for Environmental Sustainability
Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Hon. Eng. Collins Nzovu MP, engaged in productive discussions with key environmental stakeholders from Sweden and Finland during the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) held in Nairobi, Kenya.
In a meeting with Her Excellency Ms. Romina Pourmokhtari, Minister for Climate and the Environment of Sweden, Hon. Nzovu emphasized the importance of strengthening the bilateral relationship between Sweden and Zambia in crucial areas such as forestry, green and circular economy, climate change, and energy.
He underscored the significance of collaboration in implementing Zambia’s National Adaptation Plan and Green Growth Strategy, particularly in circular economy initiatives and carbon markets.
Similarly, during his discussion with His Excellency Mr. Kai Mykkanen, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change of Finland, Hon. Nzovu highlighted the potential for enhanced cooperation between Zambia and Finland in various environmental sectors.
He commended Finland’s contribution to the Southern and Eastern African Environment and Energy Partnership Programme, which aims to improve access to clean energy for marginalized communities.
Moreover, he expressed Zambia’s interest in accessing financial support from the Finnish Government for initiatives related to circular economy development and climate resilience.
Hon. Nzovu also welcomed Finland’s commitment to the 2nd replenishment of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Eighth Global Environment Facility (GEG), emphasizing Zambia’s eligibility to access funding for environmental projects.
In response, Minister Mykkanen acknowledged Zambia as a strategic partner in promoting sustainable development through green initiatives.
He expressed Finland’s readiness to collaborate with Zambia to advance the green agenda and address environmental challenges effectively.
Meanwhile, Minister Pourmokhtari echoed the importance of strengthening mechanisms for promoting circular economy practices between Sweden and Zambia. She emphasized the need for sustainable waste management strategies to foster green growth and minimize environmental degradation.
