SADC Chairperson Unveils Statue of Julius Nyerere at AU Summit
Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia and Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ Troika on Politics, Defence, and Security, led fellow Heads of State in unveiling the Statue of the Founding Father and First President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere.
The ceremony, held during the African Union Summit, was described as a heartwarming occasion that celebrated the legacy of Julius Nyerere and his contributions to the African continent.
President Hichilema emphasized the heroism, sacrifice, and noble works of Nyerere, alongside other Pan-Africanists such as Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda and Kwame Nkrumah, who advocated for the total emancipation of Africa.
The unveiling of Nyerere’s statue serves as a constant reminder to the people of Africa, particularly the youth, of the principles and values upheld by the founding fathers of African liberation movements.
It symbolizes African solidarity and unity in the pursuit of shared goals for the continent’s development and prosperity.
President Hichilema expressed gratitude to the African Union Secretariat for their efforts in erecting the statue, highlighting the significance of African solidarity and friendship in honoring the legacies of past leaders.
He also thanked fellow Heads of State for their attendance at the ceremony, underscoring the importance of collective recognition and remembrance of African heroes and heroines.
