Government Adopts Quiet Diplomacy Approach on Barotseland Issue
Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa MP, Minister of Information and Media and Chief Government Spokesperson, addressed pressing national matters, particularly the Barotseland issue.
The government has opted for a quiet diplomacy approach to address this sensitive matter, ensuring a peaceful resolution without causing chaos or division within the nation.
Minister Mweetwa emphasized that assertions of a divided Zambia are unfounded, citing peaceful coexistence among regions, including Barotseland.
He urged the opposition to refrain from exploiting the issue for political gain, emphasizing national unity and peace.
Addressing concerns about international intervention, Minister Mweetwa asserted that the Barotseland issue remains a domestic matter, reaffirming Zambia’s status as a unitary state under the constitution.
He highlighted the constitution’s supremacy and its applicability to all Zambians and state institutions.
Responding to President Hakainde Hichilema’s remarks regarding Barotseland, Minister Mweetwa clarified that while the President recognizes Barotseland as a region within Zambia, the constitution mandates upholding the country’s unitary status.
Furthermore, Minister Mweetwa welcomed the formation of the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA), citing it as evidence of Zambia’s democratic progress.
He assured that the government would facilitate the alliance’s registration, promoting a widening democratic space.
