Process to Repeal and Replace ZNBC Act Currently Underway
The Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) Board and Multichoice Zambia management paid separate courtesy calls on the Minister of Information and Media, and Chief Government Spokesperson Honourable Cornelius Mweetwa at his office in Lusaka.
ZNBC Board Chairperson, Bishop Joseph Kazhila, who also chairs Multi-Choice Board, led the delegation accompanied by notable board members.
During the meeting, the Chairperson highlighted the achievements under their tenure, such as the recruitment of senior management officials and the implementation of Performance Management Development to enhance operational efficiency.
Among the key priorities mentioned were resolving outstanding debts to National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) and Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA), increasing news air duration to 1 hour for more advertisements, and expanding the FM transmitter network to reach 55 districts countrywide.
The board emphasized the need for further transmitter installations to increase coverage from 60 percent to 90 percent.
Bishop Kazhila updated the Minister on the ongoing process to repeal and replace the ZNBC Act, emphasizing the board’s commitment to transforming the corporation into a public broadcaster.
He also sought assistance from the Ministry of Information and Media for the acquisition of title deeds for ZNBC’s land.
In a subsequent courtesy call, Multichoice Zambia Managing Director, Leah Kooma, expressed gratitude for the enduring partnership between ZNBC and MultiChoice, spanning over 29 years.
Kooma highlighted the technological advancements and support provided by MultiChoice to the creative industry, fostering the development of young talent through programs like Zambezi Magic.
Kooma acknowledged the empowerment of Zambian small and medium enterprises in producing award-winning content, citing shows such as “Mpali” and “King Buga” as examples.
She emphasized MultiChoice’s commitment to the growth of the Zambian film industry, particularly through initiatives like the talent factory.
In response to both delegations, Honourable Cornelius Mweetwa commended the ZNBC Board for their efforts to transform the corporation into a public broadcaster.
He highlighted the government’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for businesses, particularly in the private media sector.
The Minister expressed optimism that the proposed repeal and replacement of the ZNBC Act would streamline the corporation’s transition from a state broadcaster to a public broadcaster, enhancing transparency and accountability in government operations.
He urged ZNBC to act as a bridge of truth, invest more in investigative journalism, and expand its reach to a broader audience.
Regarding MultiChoice, Honourable Mweetwa acknowledged the institution’s contribution to the growth of the Zambian media industry, particularly in showcasing local content and football talent to a global audience.
The Minister concluded by emphasizing the government’s continuous support for the growth of businesses in Zambia and its commitment to fostering a thriving media industry.
