Zimba Community Applauds ECZ’s Delimitation Plans for Enhanced Representation
Residents of Zimba have expressed their support for the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s (ECZ) initiative to delimit selected constituencies and wards across the country.
The proposal particularly focuses on the delimitation of Zimba Ward in Mapatizya Constituency, a move welcomed by the community for addressing the vastness of the area.
Webby Kabamba, the immediate past Zimba Ward Councillor, emphasized the need for the ward to attain constituency status due to its extensive geographical coverage. Mr. Kabamba highlighted the challenges posed by the size of the wards, extending from Zimba to Magonda, Luyaba to Kanyanga, and Muzya to Munkolo.
He noted that the annual allocation of over K30 million for such expansive regions could be more effectively utilized with the proposed delimitation.
“The decision by the Commission is welcome as it will increase the number of wards within and around Zimba Ward,” expressed Mr. Kabamba.
George Mweemba, a resident of Mawaya Compound, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that delimitating the wards would facilitate better grassroots planning.
He pointed out that each delimited ward could have improved access to essential services such as roads, clean drinking water or boreholes, and electricity, providing significant benefits to the local population.
The ECZ recently announced its intention to kickstart the delimitation of wards and polling stations in the first quarter of 2024. Brown Kasaro, Chief Electoral Officer of ECZ, highlighted that stakeholder engagements would precede the delimitation exercise, preparing for the 2026 General Elections.
The community’s positive response reflects the anticipation of increased representation and more efficient service delivery through this strategic electoral reform.
