WWF and FQM Rally Behind CEJ’s EPD Strategy for Environmental Protection
The Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) and First Quantum Minerals (FQM) have thrown their weight behind the Centre for Environment Justice’s (CEJ) newly unveiled Strategy and Implementation Framework for the resolutions of the Environmental Protection Dialogue (EPD) and the Traditional Leader’s Caucus (TLC).
In a joint statement, the organizations emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in combating the silent crisis of climate change.
WWF Country Director Nachilala Nkombo expressed the organization’s support for the EPD, highlighting its evolution into Zambia’s premier annual environmental event.
Mr. Nkombo commended the EPD for bringing together diverse stakeholders, creating a national flagship platform for discussions on environmental health.
“The salient crisis of environmental degradation, exacerbated by climate change, demands coordinated efforts. The EPD serves as a vital dialogue that unites all those concerned about the planet’s health,” said Mr. Nkombo.
She acknowledged the pivotal role played by Traditional Leaders in addressing climate change and protecting vital resources such as the Zambezi River.
Mr. Nkombo urged collective responsibility, emphasizing that caring for Zambia’s economy should go hand in hand with preserving environmental health.
FQM Country Manager Dr. Godwin Beene echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for private entities to actively contribute to environmental protection.
“It is not right that everything must be left to Government alone to do, including combating climate change,” stated Dr. Beene, asserting FQM’s commitment to supporting initiatives like CEJ.
Dr. Beene praised CEJ and its partners for their commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.
He acknowledged the EPD Strategy and Implementation Framework as a crucial step in translating resolutions into tangible actions, marking a shift from identifying challenges to implementing solutions.
“The launch of the EPD Strategy and Implementation Framework signifies the transition from dialogue to concrete strategic actions.
It marks the shift from identifying challenges to implementing solutions. It underscores the importance of accountability,” he remarked.
Both WWF and FQM emphasized the importance of collective action and pledged continued support to CEJ in its endeavors to address environmental challenges and foster sustainable practices in Zambia.
