Tobacco Board Praises Industry Performance, Predicts Good Harvest
The Tobacco Board of Zambia (TBZ) has expressed satisfaction with the performance of the country’s tobacco industry in the first quarter of 2026, citing strong grower participation and favourable weather conditions.
TBZ Executive Director, Robert Mwale, said the industry has shown notable growth, with the number of registered growers increasing from 42,000 last season to 46,000 this season.
He attributed the positive outlook to a good rainfall pattern, which has supported a promising harvest for the rain-fed crop despite isolated hailstorms.
“We are pleased that the rainfall pattern has been excellent, which is particularly positive for the rain-fed crop,” Mr Mwale said.
He encouraged stakeholders in the industry to continue their efforts to sustain growth, emphasising that tobacco buyers are prepared to purchase the season’s crop.
There are currently 16 licensed tobacco buyers and 25 licensed sales floors, providing sufficient capacity to accommodate all growers and reduce the need for long-distance travel.
“We assure all growers that their crop will be purchased, and we encourage them to take advantage of the competitive prices available,” Mr Mwale added.
TBZ confirmed that the official marketing season will begin on 13 April 2026.
