Zambia Targets US$1 Billion Annual Beef Exports

The Zambia Beef Export Project (ZBEP), under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, is participating in the ongoing Mkushi AgriExpo in Central Province to raise awareness of the Government’s strategy to realise its ambitious target of generating US$1 billion annually from beef exports.

Led by Assistant Project Manager, Dr Cornelius Mundia, the ZBEP team is highlighting key interventions aimed at boosting farmer participation in the establishment of Animal Disease Free Compartments (ADFCs), which are critical to meeting international export standards.

Minister of Fisheries and Livestock, Mr Peter Kapala, who represented President Hakainde Hichilema at the Expo, visited the ZBEP exhibition stand and commended the project for successfully exporting its first consignment of beef to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He urged the team to sustain the momentum by strengthening engagement with stakeholders, particularly smallholder farmers, abattoir operators, and private sector players across the beef value chain.

Dr Mundia expressed gratitude for the Minister’s visit and reaffirmed the project’s commitment to intensifying stakeholder engagement and public awareness efforts.

He noted that participation in platforms such as the 2026 Mkushi AgriExpo is key to enhancing community involvement and driving sector growth.

ZBEP serves as an implementation unit tasked with spearheading Zambia’s beef export agenda, forming part of the Government’s broader strategy to diversify the economy through the livestock subsector.

The initiative seeks to improve incomes for smallholder farmers, create employment and business opportunities, strengthen the beef value chain, promote public-private partnerships, and position Zambia as a competitive net exporter of beef.
