Ethiopian Airlines Signs Deal for New Boeing 777 Freighters

Ethiopian Airlines has signed lease agreements with AerCap Holdings for two Boeing 777-300ERSF converted freighters, marking a significant expansion of its cargo operations.

The aircraft, commonly referred to as “The Big Twin”, will be the first of their kind to operate in Africa, with deliveries scheduled for the second quarter of 2028.

Speaking on the development, Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew said the acquisition will strengthen the airline’s cargo capabilities and support growing demand for air freight across the region.

“We are delighted to partner with AerCap to bring the first Boeing 777-300ERSF to Africa. These aircraft will significantly enhance our cargo capacity and efficiency, boosting trade in the region,” he said.

Mr Tasew added that the airline remains committed to investing in modern and sustainable solutions to reinforce its position in the global cargo market.

AerCap Chief Executive Officer Aengus Kelly said the agreement builds on a longstanding partnership between the two organisations.

“With 25 per cent more capacity than smaller twin-engine long-haul freighters, the 777-300ERSF offers significant cost efficiencies and will support Ethiopian Airlines in expanding its cargo platform,” he said.
