The Zambia Statistics Agency (ZamStats) has appointed Sheila S Mudenda as Statistician-General, effective 26 March 2026.

The appointment was announced by the ZamStats Board, chaired by Oliver J M Chinganya, expressing confidence in Ms Mudenda’s ability to lead the institution in delivering credible and innovative official statistics.

Ms Mudenda brings over 33 years of experience in demography, applied statistics, and research. She has been serving as Acting Statistician-General for nearly two years, during which she oversaw the production and promotion of official statistics across the National Statistical System.

She joined the former Central Statistical Office in 1993 as a Statistician in the Population and Demography Division and has since risen through the ranks, most recently serving as Assistant Director responsible for information and dissemination prior to her acting appointment in October 2024.

Throughout her career, Ms Mudenda has played a key role in the development and implementation of national statistical frameworks, including the Statistics Act Chapter 127 and the Second National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS2).

She also coordinated reporting and monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals, contributing to the production of the national SDG Indicator Framework and the 2013–2014 Zambia Demographic and Health Survey.

At the regional level, she served as the SHaSA2 National Coordinator, supporting the harmonisation and use of statistics across Africa.

Ms Mudenda holds a Master of Arts in Population and Development from the Institute of Social Studies in the Netherlands, a Master of Research Methods from the University Institute for International and European Studies, and a Bachelor of Arts in Demography from the University of Zambia.

The Board stated that her leadership will be instrumental in strengthening the coordination, analysis, and dissemination of official statistics to support evidence-based decision-making and national development.
